Ceiling and Floor Price

Ceiling and floor are the highest and lowest prices a stock can trade at in a day, set by applying the exchange’s price margin to the reference price. Borsa Istanbul sets a reference (base) price for every stock at the start of the day and applies the price margin as a percentage of it.

Key Points

  • The price cannot trade outside these limits; buyers queue at the ceiling and sellers at the floor.
  • Lots waiting at the ceiling are buy orders placed at the ceiling price that have not yet been matched; lots waiting at the floor are unmatched sell orders at the floor price.
  • placing a buy order at the ceiling does not guarantee a fill; queue position matters.

Formula / Calculation

Ceiling = Reference price × (1 + Price margin); Floor = Reference price × (1 − Price margin). Borsa Istanbul sets the margin by market, stock group and precaution status, and narrows it for some stocks. Prices are rounded to the tick size. Yatırımcı.AI stock pages show the day’s ceiling and floor.

Interpretation

Lots waiting at the ceiling are buy orders placed at the ceiling price that have not yet been matched; lots waiting at the floor are unmatched sell orders at the floor price. A ceiling with a large buyer queue signals strong demand, a floor with a seller queue strong supply. Consecutive ceilings can be news-driven or manipulative; consecutive floors point to bad news or a liquidity crunch.

Pitfalls

placing a buy order at the ceiling does not guarantee a fill; queue position matters. A ceiling streak often ends with a sharp drop. Do not confuse it with a circuit breaker; ceiling/floor limits trading, it does not halt it.
